POSITION TITLE:  School Nurse

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED:

*Graduate from an accredited school of nursing

*Possess valid Missouri license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Professional Nurse (RN)

*Maintain current CPR certification

*Maintain record of annual continuing education

*Possess good health and professional health

 

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal or Director

 

CONTRACT DAYS WORKED:  9 Months

 

JOB GOAL: 

The school nurse will assist district administrators in providing each student the fullest opportunity to receive a quality education by minimizing absences due to illness, providing nursing care during the school day, and creating a climate of health and well-being in school.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages health care within school health programs which includes programs of immunization, vision, and dental screenings, and prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • Administers and/or supervises first aid of students, faculty, and staff in accordance with established first aid protocols.
  • Identifies the health status and health needs of students. Plans and carries out appropriate interventions.
  • Maintains student health records.
  • Good communication skills with students, staff, and parents/guardians/families.
  • Confers with teachers to interpret and identify health concerns of students.
  • Act as a counselor for health concerns of children, families, and staff including recommendations for homebound education.
  • Provides health education to teachers and students and serves as a resource person to classroom teachers.
  • Assist in the formation of health curriculum, policies, goals, objectives and budgetary recommendations.
  • Give direct and indirect health and safety instruction.
  • Prepares and submits required reports.
  • Administer medications to students and maintain accurate medication records.
  • Perform procedures as needed, i.e. feeding tubes, catheterizations, etc.
  • Maintain standard health supplies.
  • Maintain medical equipment.
  • Distribute health resource material to faculty, parents and students. 
  • Terms of Employment:  Wage and work calendar to be established by the Board of Education.

     

    Evaluation:  Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the

       provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.

     

    OTHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    * Other duties as assigned.  This does not preclude the assignment of additional or supplemental duties. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment as needed to reflect such duties.

    * Supervises classroom, students, aides, volunteers, and areas as assigned.

     

    ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

    * Duties performed typically in district settings to include the cafeteria, gym, recreational areas and other assigned areas.

    * Physical demands can include but are not limited to:  Exerts up to 40 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects including equipment such as audio-visual.

    * Frequent walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and other limited physical activities are required.

    * Mental demands can include but are not limited to:  Comparing, copying, computing,

       compiling, analyzing, coordinating, and synthesizing.
